I was born and raised in Santa Ana and I lived there for 24 years. I am the daughter of immigrants, I too once lived in the 92701 zip code. There is no city I love more and no other place I would consider my home. Santa Ana is in Orange County, but it is not the Orange County that you see on television. A majority of the population is Latino, mostly immigrants, and there is an extremely high poverty rate. There is little access to parks for children, few people have health insurance, and there is often violence on the streets.
Someone brought this documentary to my attention, and in the first minute I recognized someone I knew - the woman and her son talking about having to play in a parking lot after hours because they could not afford the bus fare to go to a park. I used to do free in-home tutoring for children in Santa Ana and he was one of my students. He and his mother lived in a small studio above an apartment complex. She is a single mother and he has a learning disability. I know firsthand how hard she worked for her son and his improvement.
I hope this short documentary can bring to light some of the issues going on in the most populated city in Orange County and show people that “the OC” is more than beach towns, wealthy white folk, and Disneyland.
